This week will be a Christmas day. But do you know who is Santa Claus and the history of it? Based on the story, Santa Clause was a name of the monk named St. Nicholas. It is believed that St. Nicholas was born around 280 A.D. in Patara, near Myra modern-day Turkey. He gave away all of his inherited wealth and traveled the countryside helping the poor and sick.

One of the best story of St. Nicholas is that he saved 3 poor sisters from being sold into slave or prostitution. Over the cross of many years, St. Nicholas become popular and he become known as a protector of children and sailors.

By the Renaissance, St. Nicholas was the most popular saint in Europe. Even after the Protestant Reformation when the veneration of saint began to be discouraged, St. Nicholas maintained a positive reputation, especially in Holland.
